The Firestar Rose Story
Naming the Firestar Rose
What's in a name?
To begin with roses are given numbers not names, as most don’t survive the first years of development.
Rose names are chosen later with great care, and registered to ensure there is not (and never has been) another rose with that name.
The name Firestar grew from the Fire Service Star symbol used by CFA.
The eight pointed star is the cross of St John. Its origin lies in the Maltese Cross, the emblem of the Knights of Malta. The points were said to represent the “Knightly Virtues” of tact, loyalty, dexterity, observation, sympathy, gallantry, perseverance and explicitness.
Support and encouragement from Princess Anne, Dame Elizabeth Murdoch, Victorian Premier John Brumby and unofficially from both volunteer and career members of CFA was critical to maintaining momentum in the early months.
Once registered, Firestar became the first “Official Rose of CFA”.
